Job Purpose
Self Help Africa Uganda received funding from Community Foundation in Ireland (CFI) to implement a 3-year project in Napak District aiming at building livelihood and resilience of 1,000 smallholder farmers clustered in to 40 farmers’ groups in Poron and Apeitolim sub-counties. The BUILD programme falls under SDG Goal 1: No Poverty and Goal 2: Zero Hunger with an overall aim of strengthening resilience of smallholder farmers, women, and youth through improved food security and climate adaptation for sustainable development in Napak district, Karamoja Sub region to be achieved through improved climate smart agriculture production, improved marketing, financial inclusion and enterprise skills for smallholder farmers, and promote household nutrition and WASH practices.

Self Help Africa Uganda urgently seeks to recruit a suitable consultant to an engendered assessment for small scale business opportunities.

Under the overall supervision of the Regional Programme Manager and the Head of Programmes. The consultant will undertake a market assessment among the supported smallholder farmers, women, and youth within the project locations of Poron and Apeitolim Sub-counties in Napak District, Karamoja Sub-region. The assessment should identify both new and existing fuel efficient technologies business opportunities both within and outside their community. The consultant will undertake a SWOT Analysis for the existing business opportunities. This will help identify the unique selling points and areas that need improvement and provide insights into gaps in the market that the farmers could potentially capitalize on. A risk assessment to identify potential risks and challenges associated with entering the market will be conducted and strategies to mitigate the risk developed. The consultant will be expected to conduct a financial analysis that will spell out the business viability of the identified technologies and enable the farmers assess the financial feasibility of entering the market.

Key Responsibilities

  • Establish both the existing and preferred fuel-efficient technologies within the community.
  • Assess acceptability of each identified fuel-efficient technology
  • Develop a cost benefit analysis for each fuel-efficient technology identified.
  • Based on the cost benefit analysis, support in the development of business plans
  • Identify potential actors within the stakeholders within the outside the community
