Cyclone Freddy Emergency Appeal
On March 12th last, Cyclone Freddy hit Malawi with devastating effects. Across Malawi, it’s estimated almost 500 people have died as a result of floods and mudslides. Over 180,000 people have been displaced and are now living in temporary shelter and hastily established displacement camps.
The damage left in Cyclone Freddy’s wake is now being further compounded by cholera outbreaks. Floods have washed away toilets and sanitation systems, leaving hundreds of thousands of people without access to safe, clean drinking water.
The full extent of this disaster is still unfolding, and the numbers of affected persons is likely to grow. Self Help Africa is providing support alongside local partners. Right now – our focus is on providing vital water and sanitation supplies; and essential food items in Blantyre, and the districts of Chikwawa and Nsanje.
