in West Africa

West Africa overview

Living in arid regions on the edge of the Sahara desert, farmers in West Africa are on the front line in the fight against climate change.

Self Help Africa’s West Africa country programme operates across three countries – Burkina Faso, Ghana and Togo. Projects are implemented through local partners, with the focus on adding value to farm production and creating links between small-scale agricultural producers and private sector companies.

Because of the hot, dry climate and unpredictable weather patterns of the region, there is a particular emphasis on promoting farming approaches that are ‘climate smart’, and enabling farming communities to diversify their production.

WEST AFRICA projects

BUILDING RESILIENCE TO CLIMATE CHANGE EXTREMES AND DISASTERS

IMPROVED GOVERNANCE AND ACCESS TO WATER & SANITATION
Northern Togo
Over two years, this EU-funded project will seek to provide safe drinking water, latrines, sanitation facilities and hygiene awareness training to 36,641 people.

IMPROVING INCOMES & FOOD SECURITY THROUGH AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION
Burkina Faso
The project aims to increase the income and food situation of 1,240 farmers through training and better returns in rice and vegetable production as well as access to irrigation.

REALISING AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTIVITY GAINS IN THE SAHEL
Burkina Faso
Through this pilot, Self Help Africa proposes to test whether strengthening the capacity of the Comité Interprofession de Céréales – Burkina Faso (CIC-B) and stimulating local demand will transform the sorghum and millet value chains in the country, improving productivity, income and nutrition of smallholder farmers in dryland areas.

EMPOWERING WOMEN WITHIN THE CASHEW VALUE CHAIN
