FAQs
Trees help restore degraded land, improve soil health, protect crops, increase biodiversity and strengthen communities' resilience to climate change. Self Help Africa works with farming communities to support sustainable tree planting as part of long-term livelihood programmes.
In addition, trees provide food and income for people (mango, papaya, passion fruit, citrus, cashew and macadamia are just some examples); as well as shade and shelter for crops, animals and people.
Bees are essential pollinators for many crops, helping to maintain food production and biodiversity. Protecting pollinators supports healthier ecosystems and more resilient agriculture.
Bees produce valuable honey and wax which farmers can sell, helping to increase their income. In addition, beekeeping is not reliant on good soils or rainfall, which makes it an ideal diversification enterprise for small-scale farmers throughout sub-Saharan Africa.
Access to quality seeds helps farmers grow healthier and more nutritious crops, improve yields and strengthen food security.
Through Self Help Africa's nutrition programmes, women receive seeds and training to establish backyard gardens, including sack and keyhole gardens that require less space and water. Families enjoy a more varied diet throughout the year, while surplus produce can be sold to generate additional income and greater independence.
Your donation goes towards programmes and livelihood initiatives that help farming communities to improve food security, restore land, promote sustainable agriculture and build resilience to climate change. This includes vital interventions like improving access to seed, planting trees, and establishing beekeeping micro-enterprises.
Almost 90 cent in every euro goes to our programmes, with the remainder spent on governance, administration, and the cost of raising funds.
Self Help Africa is an international development organisation and a registered charity in Ireland and the UK. The main focus of our work is in sub-Saharan Africa, where global hunger and poverty is most acute.
We work with and in, rural communities, helping families overcome long-term poverty.
Our approach centres on helping communities build lasting, self-reliant futures through sustainable agriculture and enterprise development rather than creating dependence on aid.
Self Help Africa works with farming communities across several countries in sub-Saharan Africa, including Kenya, Ethiopia, Malawi, Zambia, Burkina Faso, Mozambique and Nigeria.
Each programme is designed alongside local communities and partners to respond to local needs while improving food security, increasing incomes and building resilience to climate change.
Self Help Africa supports farmers through climate-smart agriculture, including tree planting, land restoration, improved farming practices, enterprise development, access to safe water and sanitation, and ongoing training and technical support.
These approaches help communities adapt to changing weather patterns while protecting the natural resources they rely on.
