Location: Lusaka | Call: Call II | Grant: EUR 213,200 | Dates: 1 Dec 2025–30 Nov 2027
ABOUT THE COMPANY
Kapenda Mabula Natural Products Ltd, trading as Luano Honey and the Luano Food Company, is a Zambian agro-processing company with core operations in honey processing and the production of value-added food and personal care products. Its product range includes infused honeys (ginger and chili), beeswax, lip balm, honey chocolate spread, chili sauce, and a jollof spice mix. The company also engages in agricultural commodity trading and manages its logistics requirements through its sister company, Fendeza Logistics.
Luano has diversified into avocado oil processing and currently supplies crude avocado oil to buyers in Europe.
In 2024, the company received a grant to acquire a pyrolysis machine as part of a waste-to-value initiative. The machine was commissioned in July 2025, and initial quantities of biochar have since been produced, including trials utilising baobab agricultural waste.
HOW THE GRANT IS BEING USED

Through innovative waste-to-value technologies, the company converts agricultural waste into products that improve soil health, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and create new economic opportunities for farmers and rural communities.
The project combines biochar production using pyrolysis technology with biogas generation from avocado processing residues to produce clean electricity for onsite operations. Alongside these technologies, Luano is undertaking field trials, demonstration plots, and carbon certification activities to validate product performance, support farmer adoption, and access carbon markets. The company is also strengthening the avocado value chain through aggregation centres and a planned nursery to ensure a reliable and sustainable supply of feedstock.
The initiative is expected to eliminate organic waste, lower factory energy costs, permanently sequester carbon, and produce locally manufactured soil amendments that can improve smallholder productivity. By engaging approximately 5,000 smallholder farmers and creating new employment opportunities, the project demonstrates how circular business models can generate lasting environmental, economic, and social value.
