{"id":5954,"date":"2020-03-24T15:30:27","date_gmt":"2020-03-24T15:30:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/us\/?p=5954"},"modified":"2020-06-13T15:19:13","modified_gmt":"2020-06-13T14:19:13","slug":"marys-mango-tree","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/us\/marys-mango-tree\/","title":{"rendered":"Mary&#8217;s Mango Tree"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Mary Banda lives in a village close to Karonga in Northern Malawi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Mary, the 30-year-old mango tree that stands in front of her tin-roof home is a tree of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEvery year, It provides me with food and it provides me with money,\u201d she says. \u201cMy father was wise when he planted it.&nbsp; He told us when we were small to take care of it, and we would be grateful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"x-resp-embed x-is-video x-is-youtube\"><iframe title=\"#onemilliontrees Vol.2: Mary&#039;s Mango Tree\" width=\"877\" height=\"493\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sD4qcxczVvY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Now standing close to 40ft tall, the tree gives Mary an abundance of fruit.&nbsp; She estimates that her harvests up to 30 baskets, each season, and uses some for her own family, and for her near neighbours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But most of the crop is taken into town by Mary, where she sells it to local people, every weekend.&nbsp; Sometimes, traders come out from the town to buy mango from her, she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mary estimates that sales of fruit from her tree earns Mary close to \u20ac250, a year.
