{"id":4167,"date":"2016-12-21T15:57:33","date_gmt":"2016-12-21T15:57:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/us\/?p=4167"},"modified":"2016-12-21T16:08:21","modified_gmt":"2016-12-21T16:08:21","slug":"12-faces-that-embody-the-success-of-2016","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/us\/12-faces-that-embody-the-success-of-2016\/","title":{"rendered":"12 faces that embody the success of 2016"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>12 months, 12 faces, 12 stories.<\/p>\n<p>As 2016 draws to a close we&#8217;d like to share with you the successful stories of 12\u00a0amazing people whose own hard work is changing their lives and their families&#8217; in Africa.<\/p>\n<p>The pictures and stories below celebrate the hard work of these farmers as well as the impact that your support has\u00a0on families across Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Limata, Stephen, Samada and the others are amongst close to\u00a01.8 million people that we worked with in 2016, through close to\u00a070 development projects carried out\u00a0in\u00a0nine countries in Sub-Saharan Africa.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/us\/2016-your-support-in-pictures\/\">A heartfelt &#8216;thank you&#8217; for\u00a0your continued\u00a0support this year.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Reviving a &#8220;tired land&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/12\/WestAfrica_BurkinaFaso_Limata_850x504px.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-6667 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/12\/WestAfrica_BurkinaFaso_Limata_850x504px.jpg\" alt=\"westafrica_burkinafaso_limata_850x504px\" width=\"850\" height=\"504\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Construction of a large compost pit and the production of her own natural fertiliser has enabled farmer Limata to increase her yields dramatically in Burkina Faso. <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/us\/compost-revives-tired-land\/\">Read her story.<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Honey boosts income<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/12\/Uganda_honey_helps_850x503.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-6703 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/12\/Uganda_honey_helps_850x503.jpg\" alt=\"uganda_honey_helps_850x503\" width=\"850\" height=\"503\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For two years, Evalyn and Tito\u00a0have been keeping bees in Kamwenge, Uganda. They use the income that they earn from the honey they harvest from their six wooden hives to supplement the income earned from their small farm. <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/us\/honeyhelps\/\">Read their story.<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Booster loan provides widow with a stable future<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/12\/Uganda_Justine_850x504px.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-6664 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/12\/Uganda_Justine_850x504px.jpg\" alt=\"uganda_justine_850x504px\" width=\"850\" height=\"504\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As a member of \u2018Binyungu Savings and Loans Group\u2019 in Uganda, Justine borrowed \u00a0300,000 Ugandan shillings (just \u20ac90) from the fund, and invested in four piglets. With access to the booster fund, Justine suddenly found herself with an opportunity to plan for the future, something she hadn\u2019t been able to do since her partner passed away. <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/us\/booster-loan-provides-widow-with-a-stable-future\/\">Read her story.<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Enterprising Samada is a role model for others<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/12\/Uganda_Samada_850x504px.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-6666 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/12\/Uganda_Samada_850x504px.jpg\" alt=\"uganda_samada_850x504px\" width=\"850\" height=\"504\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Able to access a \u2018booster loan\u2019 of 200,000 Ugandan shillings (\u20ac60), farmer Samada opened a small store. She now works every day on her farm, and each evening in the store. The diversification of her income has given her family a new certainty in life she has long craved. <a href=\"https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/us\/enterprisingsamada\/\">Read her story.<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mother earns better income from improved livestock<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/12\/Ethiopia_Teja_850x504_px.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-6649 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/12\/Ethiopia_Teja_850x504_px.jpg\" alt=\"ethiopia_teja_850x504_px\" width=\"850\" height=\"505\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Teja lives with her husband Samison on a small farm in an upland region of Ethiopia where poor soils and vulnerability to drought has left thousands of poor families dependent on food aid. Her school attendance is possible because her parents can afford\u00a0it.
