{"id":3400,"date":"2016-02-17T17:40:17","date_gmt":"2016-02-17T17:40:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/us\/?p=3400"},"modified":"2016-12-21T15:21:17","modified_gmt":"2016-12-21T15:21:17","slug":"lillian","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/us\/lillian\/","title":{"rendered":"Poultry&#8217;s potential is being realised by Lillian"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cGood things come to those who are prepared to work hard for them,\u201d says Lillian, a 59-year-old grandmother whose success as a poultry producer in Manjakazi village in Eastern Zambia is an inspiration to others.<\/p>\n<p>More than four years ago Lillian Makukula constructed a complex network of poultry houses on her small farm in the centre of the village \u2013 and quickly began attracting the interest and attention of others.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/02\/Lillian300.jpg?432866\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-4637\" src=\"https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/02\/Lillian300-300x263.jpg?432866\" alt=\"Lillian300\" width=\"300\" height=\"263\" \/><\/a>\u201cI learned about poultry-breeding, about the importance of proper feed and the importance of proper housing, and I also received an improved breed cockerel, which has helped me to strengthen the breeding of my local birds,\u201d she said. \u201cThe chicks that I now produce are much bigger and stronger, and my hens are giving me eggs every day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lillian\u2019s daughter Emma supports her in the small business, while also working in a voluntary capacity since she was trained as a \u2018community development advisor\u2019 for the district. Emma advises villagers on different agricultural practices.
