{"id":19170,"date":"2025-09-15T16:15:09","date_gmt":"2025-09-15T15:15:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/uk\/?p=19170"},"modified":"2025-09-15T16:25:24","modified_gmt":"2025-09-15T15:25:24","slug":"childhood-malnourishment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/uk\/childhood-malnourishment\/","title":{"rendered":"Dramatic Drop in Childhood Malnourishment"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The introduction of kitchen vegetable gardens, promotion of enriched food crops combined with extensive awareness training delivered largely through womens\u2019 groups has dramatically reduced childhood malnourishment in a remote part of northern Kenya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Studies carried out on the impact of Self Help Africa\u2019s work with 60,000 households in Baringo County found that childhood \u2018stunting\u2019 \u2013 a condition where the body and brain of infants is negatively affected by poor nutrition \u2013 was reduced by 50% thanks to the work that was implemented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over a five-year period the Baringo Resilience Project sought to improve crop diversity and diets, reduce seasonal food shortages, and improve harvesting, storage and income generating opportunities for farming families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result of the work,&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The number of infants categorised as \u2018stunted\u2019 as a result of inadequate nutrition in their diet in Baringo reduced from 3 out of 10 to 1.5 children in 10 at the end of the five year project cycle.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>80% of those surveyed had established \u2018kitchen vegetable gardens\u2019<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>68% had received livestock (cattle, goats, sheep or poultry)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cultivation of nutrient rich crops that offered a food alternative to the traditional staple, maize (corn), had increased significantly : (including beans by 40%, sweet potato by 23%, millet by 28% and groundnuts by 11%).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Training programmes had increased childhood breastfeeding of infants over six months old from 68% to 76%, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>78% of women of reproductive aged (15-49 years) were reported to now have a diet that provided the minimum dietary diversity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-buttons-is-layout-16018d1d wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button is-style-fill\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-background wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/uk\/donate\/\" style=\"background-color:#7ab92a\"><strong>SUPPORT OUR WORK TODAY<\/strong><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The introduction of kitchen vegetable gardens, promotion of enriched food crops combined with extensive awareness training delivered largely through womens\u2019 groups has dramatically reduced childhood malnourishment in a remote part of northern Kenya.
