{"id":17703,"date":"2024-04-18T16:54:26","date_gmt":"2024-04-18T15:54:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/uk\/?p=17703"},"modified":"2024-04-19T15:38:22","modified_gmt":"2024-04-19T14:38:22","slug":"earth-day-2024-sustainable-agriculture-solutions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/uk\/earth-day-2024-sustainable-agriculture-solutions\/","title":{"rendered":"Earth Day 2024 &#8211; Self Help Africa&#8217;s Sustainable Agriculture Solutions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">Neftali Mugizi and Catherine Nabatesa from our Uganda office. <\/p><p>Earth Day 2024 takes place on 22 April to highlight and promote environmental issues, conservation and the protection of our planet.\u00a0With that in mind, we&#8217;re highlighting the efforts that we&#8217;re making through sustainable agriculture solutions.<\/p><p>This year\u2019s theme \u2013 \u2018Planet vs. Plastics\u2019 \u2013 focuses on recognising the threat of plastic pollution by calling for a 60% reduction in plastic production by 2040.&nbsp;<\/p><p>At Self Help Africa, regenerative agriculture, climate-smart farming practices and reforestation&nbsp;efforts are at the core of our work with small-scale farming communities in sub-Saharan Africa.<\/p><p>We&#8217;re supporting farmers with drought-tolerant seeds and training to help nourish soil, conserve moisture, and use water and land as efficiently and sustainably as possible.<\/p><p>Through our Irish Aid-funded&nbsp; Sustainable Livelihoods and Inclusive Markets project in Uganda, for example, we established four Ecological Land Use Management (ELUM) centres, which provide training for farmers in climate-smart practices, such as irrigation and intercropping (growing two or more crops on the same piece of land). It\u2019s techniques like these that help smallholder farmers grow a wider variety of crops while using the land sustainably.&nbsp;<\/p><p>Self Help Africa is also part of the world\u2019s biggest community-led land restoration project, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.evergreening.org\/restoreafrica\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Global EverGreening Alliance\u2019s Restore Africa<\/a>&nbsp;initiative, which recently launched in Kenya. It aims to restore 1.9 million hectares of land, and directly supports 1.5 million smallholder farming families across six countries in Africa \u2013 Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.&nbsp;<\/p><p>We have also launched&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/onemilliontrees\/carbon-offset\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a campaign<\/a>&nbsp;encouraging companies to offset their carbon footprint by planting trees with us in Africa.
