{"id":1403,"date":"2014-05-09T12:19:15","date_gmt":"2014-05-09T11:19:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/new\/uk\/news\/progress-for-africa\/"},"modified":"2016-12-21T16:22:57","modified_gmt":"2016-12-21T16:22:57","slug":"progress-for-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/uk\/progress-for-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Progress for Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Africa\u2019s smallholder farmers have a vital role to play in the continent\u2019s future economic growth and development, former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan said at the launch of the annual Africa Progress Panel (APP) Report, this week.<\/p>\n<p>The 2014 report reinforces Self Help Africa\u2019s belief that small-scale farming communities are the key to ending hunger and poverty in the region.<\/p>\n<p>Calling for a \u2018uniquely African green revolution\u2019 that adapts lessons provided by Asia to Africa\u2019s conditions, the APP say that there is \u2018no alternative\u2019 to a strengthened focus on agriculture.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfrica is a region of smallholder farmers. Some people mistakenly see that as a source of weakness and inefficiency. We see it as a strength and potential source of growth,\u201d the report\u2019s authors state.<\/p>\n<p>In the absence of investment and support for the creation of a flourishing agricultural sector, \u201cthe majority of Africans will be cut adrift from the rising tide of prosperity,\u201d the APP\u2019s annual report warns.<\/p>\n<p>Welcoming the publication, Self Help Africa CEO Ray Jordan said that it was encouraging that the Africa Progress Panel has placed such emphasis on the importance of agricultural development. \u201cFrom our own experiences we know that small-scale farmers are vital. Most people in sub-Saharan Africa live on small-farms, and most of these farms have the potential to grow much more and drive economic development\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n<p>Chaired by Kofi Annan, the ten-member Africa Progress Panel advocates at the highest levels for equitable and sustainable development in Africa.
