Teso, in northern Uganda, is one of the most troubled places on Earth. People here are still recovering more than a decade on from years of violence and destruction at the hands of warlord Joseph Kony and his Lord\u2019s Resistance Army. Many people were murdered, women raped, and countless villages were burnt and crops destroyed. Children were stolen away to become child soldiers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Today, Teso remains one of the poorest parts of Uganda. Many households survive on subsistence farming, growing barely enough to eat. More than half the people here live on less than 15p a day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Back in 2019, we asked you to \u2018Give2Grow\u2019, for the people of Teso. And give you did \u2013 thanks to your generosity, we raised \u00a3268,939, including \u00a3129,530 of match funding from the UK Government. So while the recent history of Teso is grim, the future doesn\u2019t have to be. And it won\u2019t be, for 1,000 smallholder farmers and their families, thanks to your generous support of Self Help Africa and the UK Government\u2019s Give2Grow project.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Two years on, we are delighted to share with you, some of the stories of how lives in Teso have changed for the better as a result of Give2Grow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The funds raised and matched, supported 40 groups of 25 farmers \u2013 with a focus on women, who made up over 70% of beneficiaries, as well as young people. The groups were trained in the areas of savings, agriculture, hygiene and sanitation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The savings groups set up enabled people like Hellen and Emmanuel Achen to achieve their dream of building a house \u2013 something they never would have thought possible. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAfter saving for a year, we received dividends. We used this to make bricks, and now we\u2019ve built a house\u201d Hellen explains. Her husband Emmanuel continues \u201cWe were sleeping in grass hut houses, and taking care of these was really difficult \u2013 a fire could happen at any time. It was a dream we had for a long time, building the house. It\u2019s helped us to protect ourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The groups also received livelihoods training and farm inputs, including livestock. Mary Apio\u2019s group has been able to purchase sheep, goats and acquire cows too. \u201cSelf Help Africa arrived in 2019 and provided us with training on poultry, goat keeping and crop management. It\u2019s truly been life-changing.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Joyce Allero has also reaped the benefits of training provided by Give2Grow. \u201cThe training has really opened by mind to the possibilities \u2013 I\u2019ve now secured a plot of land, and am looking to get a garden, so I can build a home.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And thanks to Give2Grow\u2019s business training and savings scheme, Madalena Ikokor is now running a successful shop. \u201cThe knowledge that I have received from Self Help Africa has enabled us to build this shop. It\u2019s made me realise that women can manage a business, it\u2019s not just something for men. Now I\u2019ve got my shop, I have money for food, clothing, I have a balanced diet, and most importantly, I can pay for my children\u2019s education. All because of the knowledge acquired from Self Help Africa.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Project manager Esther Agule has seen first-hand, the positive impact of Give2Grow on the Teso community, over the last two years. \u201cI\u2019ve seen that the project has changed the lives of these farmers. They are not struggling anymore. They have gone to another level. There has been tremendous change.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
At Self Help Africa, we believe that everyone deserves the chance to stand on their own two feet and reach their potential. And thanks to you, and with the support of the UK Government, 1,000 people living in Teso have done just this, and can look forward to a brighter future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
