{"id":13192,"date":"2021-06-29T10:38:06","date_gmt":"2021-06-29T09:38:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/uk\/?p=13192"},"modified":"2021-06-29T10:38:07","modified_gmt":"2021-06-29T09:38:07","slug":"10000-trees-rehabilitate-degraded-kenyan-lands-self-help-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/uk\/10000-trees-rehabilitate-degraded-kenyan-lands-self-help-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"10,000 Trees Rehabilitate Degraded Kenyan Lands"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Self Help Africa\u2019s Kenya team have joined representatives from local communities, forestry and environmental services, and other agencies to plant 10,000 new trees on degraded lands along one of the most important water catchments in Baringo County.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 300 community representatives and guests attended a ceremony that launched the initiative on World Environment Day, with the Governor of the expansive Baringo County, Stanley Kiptis officially launching the new tree planting initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"x-resp-embed x-is-video x-is-youtube\"><iframe title=\"Tree Planting in Baringo - World Environment Day\" width=\"877\" height=\"493\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VZD-k6cD9W8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The tree planting took place at Chemususu, Baringo\u2019s largest water catchment area, The catchment area is the source of many rivers and streams draining through Baringo and all the way south to Nakuru County, and provides hundreds of thousands of communities with water for domestic use, livestock, and crop production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The work was carried out as part of Self Help Africa\u2019s new four-year Baringo climate adaptation project, which is designed to improve access for 10,000 agro-pastoralist households to agricultural extension services and other support in the area.&nbsp;\u2018Baringo Resilience Initiative: Nurturing Greater Opportunity (BARINGO),\u2019 is backed by the European Unioin, and will contribute to food, nutrition and income security by promoting productive, climate resilient and nutrition sensitive agriculture and livestock production strategies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Baringo County is largely Arid and Semi-Arid (ASAL) in central\/northern Kenya with characteristic high levels of degradation. The situation is made worse by climate change and weather variability often resulting in extreme conditions of drought, floods and more recently pest infestation such as the recent invasion of desert locusts.
