{"id":13106,"date":"2021-05-25T13:03:53","date_gmt":"2021-05-25T12:03:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/uk\/?p=13106"},"modified":"2021-06-10T09:11:44","modified_gmt":"2021-06-10T08:11:44","slug":"weve-reached-one-million-trees-with-your-support","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/uk\/weve-reached-one-million-trees-with-your-support\/","title":{"rendered":"We&#8217;ve Reached One Million Trees with Your Support"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On a small hill overlooking Lake Ziway in Ethiopia\u2019s Great Rift Valley, a group of schoolkids gathered to plant some trees.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"x-resp-embed x-is-video x-is-youtube\"><iframe title=\"One Million Trees - We Made It!\" width=\"877\" height=\"493\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2hcXEhBGPk0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure><p>The recent occasion marked the culmination of a year-long campaign to plant one million new trees in Africa. The 30 small saplings, most of them avocado, were planted by the children and their parents outside Abossa village close to the local primary school. It brought to 480,000 the number of tree seedlings planted at Lake Ziway, and to one million the total number to have been planted across Africa in the past year, thanks to the campaign.<\/p><p>Launched in February 2020,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/onemilliontrees\/uk\">\u2018One Million Trees\u2019<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.selfhelpafrica.org\/onemilliontrees\">\u00a0<\/a>set out to plant a million trees in Africa, as well as a further 100,000 new native trees in the UK and Ireland. <br><br>It captured the public imagination, and was a notable highlight of a challenging, pandemic disrupted year, with close to 5,000 people sending in donations, and an array of corporate backers lending their support.<br><br>The message was simple and effective \u2013 \u2018you can plant trees and make a<br>difference, while also contributing to the lives and the welfare of rural poor<br>communities in Africa \u2013 where trees are a source of food, income, shade,<br>shelter and much more.\u2019<br><br>In March 2021 a new collaboration, &#8216;Another One Million Trees&#8217; was launched, with the same goals as in 2020. Additionally,  businesses are being invited to get involved, with the opportunity to plant trees in Africa as a means of offsetting a company\u2019s carbon
