{"id":7432,"date":"2017-02-01T11:42:27","date_gmt":"2017-02-01T11:42:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/ie\/?p=7432"},"modified":"2017-02-07T16:28:16","modified_gmt":"2017-02-07T16:28:16","slug":"better-storage-boosts-fathers-income","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/ie\/better-storage-boosts-fathers-income\/","title":{"rendered":"Better storage boosts father&#8217;s income"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Inoussa, 38, father of five children, works hard to grow onions, maize, beans, tomatoes and peppers on his small farm in the rural village of Liouligou, Burkina Faso.<\/p>\n<p>He begins work in the fields every morning at 6am, breaking only when the sun gets too hot to continue.<\/p>\n<p>Just a few years ago though, Inoussa\u2019s hard work often didn\u2019t pay off. Like most smallholder farmers in Burkina Faso, he used to lose up to 40% of his harvest to pest, sun or disease, as he didn\u2019t have a place to store his produce properly.<\/p>\n<p>However, the building of a storage house and the help of simple tools and knowledge have truly turned things around for Inoussa, boosting his production and income beyond his expectations.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to the storage house built during the project &#8211; which benefits 27 other farmers in the area &#8211; Inoussa can now keep his onions longer and wait until the market price is high to sell them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Watch Inoussa&#8217;s interview:<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"x-resp-embed x-is-video x-is-youtube\"><iframe title=\"Better storage boosts father&#039;s income\" width=\"877\" height=\"493\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/oTTk6YkwoOY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI also received training, onions seeds,\u201d he explains. \u201cI learned how to grow the seeds, how to plant them and how to water them correctly. Before the project, I could grow four or five 100kg bags of onions. Now I can grow 20!\u201d exclaims Inoussa, who has also doubled his production of tomatoes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith this extra income I have bought two cows that I use to farm my land.\u201d Inoussa can now farm five hectares of land, when he struggled to farm even one in the past.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/02\/Inoussa-and-cow_850x504.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7436 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/02\/Inoussa-and-cow_850x504.jpg\" alt=\"Inoussa-and-cow_850x504\" width=\"850\" height=\"504\" srcset=\"https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/02\/Inoussa-and-cow_850x504.jpg 850w, https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/02\/Inoussa-and-cow_850x504-300x178.jpg 300w, https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/02\/Inoussa-and-cow_850x504-768x455.jpg 768w, https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/02\/Inoussa-and-cow_850x504-100x59.jpg 100w, https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/02\/Inoussa-and-cow_850x504-400x237.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Besides planning to build a larger and more comfortable house for his family, Inoussa is happy to say he doesn\u2019t have to worry about school fees anymore:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSchool fees used to be the most difficult thing for me. Plus, as my children grow up, the fees are becoming more expensive. Fortunately, today I can afford it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/02\/Inoussa-and-son_850x504.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7434 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/02\/Inoussa-and-son_850x504.jpg\" alt=\"Inoussa-and-son_850x504\" width=\"850\" height=\"504\" srcset=\"https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/02\/Inoussa-and-son_850x504.jpg 850w, https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/02\/Inoussa-and-son_850x504-300x178.jpg 300w, https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/02\/Inoussa-and-son_850x504-768x455.jpg 768w, https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/02\/Inoussa-and-son_850x504-100x59.jpg 100w, https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2017\/02\/Inoussa-and-son_850x504-400x237.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Worries, however, are not yet a thing of the past for Inoussa. While his family\u2019s diet has improved, the short rainy seasons threaten their food security:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen the rain doesn\u2019t come, we are obliged to buy food to eat. I had a well before and the project helped me with building eight more.\u201d Although those are helpful to collect and keep water, when the rain fails, the wells remain empty, he adds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Nonetheless, Inoussa has concrete plans to continue improving his family\u2019s life. His next goal: to buy a tricycle, so his family can easily bring their vegetables and crops to the market, situated a few kilometres away.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The
