{"id":4399,"date":"2016-01-19T10:38:45","date_gmt":"2016-01-19T10:38:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/ie\/?p=4399"},"modified":"2016-12-21T14:43:57","modified_gmt":"2016-12-21T14:43:57","slug":"water-project-wins-schools-science-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/ie\/water-project-wins-schools-science-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Water project wins schools science award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\">Three young science students from Kildare are set for the trip of a lifetime to Africa, after winning a top award at this year\u2019s BT Young Scientist Exhibition.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Ben Conlon, Ruaidhr\u00ed Jordan and Mason Scallan from Salesian College in Celbridge won the \u2018Science for Development Award\u2019 at the annual science fair at Dublin&#8217;s RDS,\u00a0recently.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The boys\u2019 project looked at ways of preserving water in developing countries using a chemical compound called sodium polyacrylate.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cIt\u2019s a substance which can absorb 800 times its own weight in water,\u201d said Ruaidhr\u00ed about the project. \u201cBy absorbing the water it can reduce evaporation, and thus preserve the already scarce water supply in developing countries,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/gY2m3qrZE8s\">[youtube https:\/\/youtu.be\/gY2m3qrZE8s]<\/a><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;It is exciting to think that a project like this could even save lives during droughts in arid countries,\u201d added Ben.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">A government travel bursary provided by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldwiseschools.ie\/\">WorldWise Global Schools<\/a>, Irish Aid&#8217;s Development Education unit, was awarded to the boys to enable them to travel on a schools study visit to sub-Saharan Africa with \u00a0Gorta-Self Help Africa.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The award, which is in its 11th year, has been presented in the past to students who have developed fuel-efficient cooking stoves, solar-powered water purification devices, and devised methods to preserve dairy produce in hot climates.
