{"id":38217,"date":"2026-08-07T13:33:33","date_gmt":"2026-08-07T12:33:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/ie\/?p=38217"},"modified":"2026-08-07T13:42:56","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T12:42:56","slug":"clean-energy-access-cookstoves-malawi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/ie\/clean-energy-access-cookstoves-malawi\/","title":{"rendered":"Thousands Access Cleaner Energy through Malawi Subsidy Programme\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tens of thousands of families in rural Malawi are enjoying cleaner and more reliable energy to light their homes and cook meals through a Self Help Africa energy project in partnership with GIZ EnDev and CUMO Microfinance.<br><br>The \u20ac3.5 million DSS-RBF project (short for demand-side subsidies results-based financing) offered financial subsidies to low-income rural households so that they could purchase solar home systems and improved cookstoves for less. The project focused on selling stoves and solar items at a lower costs to families.<br><br>Within two years, 73,380 households who were previously struggling with inefficient and unhealthy energy sources had improved cookstoves, known locally as \u2018chitetezo mbaula\u2019, and 29,423 solar home systems were installed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"x-resp-embed x-is-video x-is-youtube\"><iframe title=\"Thousands Access Cleaner Energy through Malawi Subsidy Programme\" width=\"877\" height=\"493\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IGqg2I2JUqI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of those benefitted was Meke. Before purchasing the ICS, Meke and her family used to struggle with cooking as they were using a lot of firewood which required them to have a considerable amount of money for the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBefore the project I was struggling using the three stone cooking method which required a lot of firewood. I struggled to find money for firewood. When I bought the stove, I was excited knowing my cooking struggle would end and I can testify that this stove has helped us save money as it uses less firewood and produces less smoke which has helped in conserving the environment,\u201d explains Meke.<br><br>The programme has also supported Malawi\u2019s growing clean energy market. Namuleri Energy Limited, a Malawian-owned renewable energy company specialising in solar home systems and clean cooking solutions that was contracted through the project, grew its contract from 600 solar home installations to 7,000 in just over a year and recruited nearly 100 people through the project as a result.
