Cross River State has taken another important step toward improving access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services by launching four strategic WASH documents to strengthen and sustain WASH delivery across the state.

The launch, held on May 26, 2026, was supported by Self Help Africa under the WASH Systems for Health Programme. The newly launched documents include:

The development of these documents comes at a critical time for the state’s WASH sector. Across Cross River State, many communities still face significant challenges in accessing safe and sustainable WASH services. Current data shows that 41% of the population still practice open defecation, while only 8% of schools and 0.4% of healthcare facilities meet the basic minimum WASH standards. In addition, 462 out of the state’s 1,322 mapped water points are non-functional. This hardware graveyard of stranded capital is valued at 730 million naira (£395,816), limiting access to clean and reliable water sources for thousands of residents.

The situation remains particularly concerning in Yala Local Government Area (LGA). Despite previous Open Defecation Free (ODF) certification milestones, the LGA now records 42.3% open defecation across all 14 wards. Many communities continue to struggle with inadequate WASH infrastructure, weak institutional systems, and limited financing needed to maintain existing facilities and expand access for underserved populations.

The newly launched documents are expected to provide practical and coordinated pathways toward addressing these challenges. They outline strategies for improving sanitation access, strengthening financing for rural and small-town WASH services, increasing investment planning at the local government level, and enforcing measures to reduce open defecation.

Self Help Africa provided technical support throughout the development process, including technical reviews, local government assessments, stakeholder consultations, and validation sessions. The process also benefited from active contributions and engagement from government institutions, development partners, civil society organisations, community representatives and the private sector.

Speaking ahead of the launch, Self Help Africa Country Director, Joy Aderele, described the development of the strategic WASH documents as a strong demonstration of what can be achieved through effective coordination and inclusive stakeholder engagement.

“We believe that lasting WASH progress in the state can only be achieved when all actors work together with a common vision and shared responsibility. I commend the Cross River State Government, particularly the Ministry of Water Resources, for the leadership and political commitment demonstrated throughout the development of these reform documents.”

Beyond policy and planning, the launch signals renewed momentum toward building stronger WASH systems that are inclusive, sustainable, and capable of meeting the needs of present and future generations.

As implementation begins, continued collaboration between government, communities, partners, and the private sector will remain essential to translating these commitments into visible improvements in the lives of people across Cross River State.

Cross River State has taken another important step toward improving access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services by launching four strategic WASH documents to strengthen and sustain WASH delivery across the state.

[637,1264

post-37967","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","category-nigeria
