One of Ireland\u2019s best known charity fundraisers has been honoured on the double for his remarkable career in service of others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Self Help Africa\u2019s Ronan Scully was presented with the annual Oireachtas Human Dignity Award at a ceremony in Leinster House, just weeks after University College Galway had awarded him an honourary doctorate for his work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Galway-based Ronan, who has worked with Self Help Africa since 2010, was honoured by the Oireachtas for his many years of service to others, both as a volunteer and professionally, in some of the world\u2019s poorest countries, and for his commitment to youth education and development.
Seanad Cathaoirleach Mark Daly said that \u201cin honouring Ronan Scully, we are also paying tribute to countless Irish people who, since the foundation of the State, have worked to prevent and alleviate human suffering across the world.\u201d Independent Senator R\u00f3n\u00e1n Mullen, who proposed Mr Scully for the Award, described him as \u201ca person of energy, enthusiasm, faith and hope, dedicated to the improving people\u2019s lives in the toughest parts of the world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Just days earlier, Ronan Scully was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Galway. In presenting him with the citation, NUIG said that the honour recognised his dedication to humanitarianism and tireless commitment to others less fortunate than himself, in places all over the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During a 30 years career raising funds that make the work of charities possible, Ronan Scully has raised millions of euro for charitable causes.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
