World Environment Day is an annual event celebrated on June 5th<\/sup> to encourage environmental action and protection. First held in 1974, over the years World Environment Day has grown to a broad, global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated by participants in over 100 countries.<\/p>

The theme of this year\u2019s World Environment Day is \u201cEcosystem Restoration.\u201d We must strive to continue creating sustainable ways of living, working and development while protecting, restoring and creating new ecosystems for future generations.<\/p>

At Self Help Africa we\u2019re committed to the objectives of World Environment Day, with regenerative agriculture, climate smart farming practices and reforestation efforts at the core of much of our work with small-scale farming communities in Africa.<\/p>

We recently launched a new campaign that is encouraging companies to offset their carbon footprint<\/a> by planting trees with us in Africa and Ireland.<\/p>

These trees are being planted in collaboration with local communities, farming cooperatives and an array of local partners, and will see large and small-scale tree planting activities taking place in countries across sub-Saharan Africa such as Zambia, Ethiopia, Burkina Faso, Kenya and Uganda.<\/p>

The trees will provide shade, shelter, food and income while also reducing carbon in the atmosphere. If it reaches its goal, the initiative will enable Irish businesses to plant trees that will remove more than 20 million tonnes of carbon from the atmosphere every year.<\/p>
