{"id":17676,"date":"2020-09-18T08:59:47","date_gmt":"2020-09-18T07:59:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/ie\/?p=17676"},"modified":"2020-10-08T15:57:14","modified_gmt":"2020-10-08T14:57:14","slug":"science-showcase","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/ie\/science-showcase\/","title":{"rendered":"Online Celebration of Student Science Projects"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Science students seeking to address challenges faced by communities in poorer countries of the world were celebrated at a recent virtual event hosted by Self Help Africa in collaboration with Irish Aid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ten hand-picked student projects from last spring\u2019s BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition (BTYSTE) were featured at the showcase event, which was presented before an online audience that included the Minister for Overseas Development and Diaspora, Colm Brophy, and to a panel of guest scientists and experts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio wp-embed-aspect-4-3\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"x-resp-embed x-is-video x-is-youtube\"><iframe title=\"BTYSE OnlineShowcase2020\" width=\"877\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KxDs9muSdIk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption>The Self Help Africa\/Irish Aid &#8216;Science for Development Showcase&#8217; went online this year<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Amongst the projects to take part were the winners of this year\u2019s Irish Aid sponsored Science for Development Award at the BTYSTE, Salome Maher Bordalo and Sophie McElligott from St. Joseph\u2019s Mercy Secondary School, Navan, along with the 2019 winner of the prize, Sean Byrne from Wicklow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amongst the projects showcased were Salome and Sophie\u2019s winning project that developed sanitary pads and looked at the challenges of menstruation for women in the developing world. Other student projects featured addressed aspects of soil fertility, using waste water for irrigating vegetables, how orange peel waste could be used as fertilizer, and how urban waste might be tackled in developing countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event included a \u2018virtual\u2019 tour of the headquarters of the Dept of Foreign Affairs \u2013 Iveagh House \u2013 where the annual showcase was originally scheduled to take place before the coronavirus pandemic. The event also featured contributions by the founder of the BT Young Scientist Exhibition Dr. Tony Scott, by climate change and environmental journalist John Gibbons, and by Self Help Africa\u2019s senior agricultural advisor, Paul Wagstaff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Minister for Overseas Development &amp; Diaspora Colm Brophy commended the diverse student projects for how they sought answers to some of the challenges facing communities in other parts of the globe. Mr Brophy said that young people, and science, had an important role to play in addressing the issues that faced people living in poverty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00d3rla McBreen, Director of Civil Society and Development Education at Irish Aid expressed her regret that the students could not join them in person at Iveagh House this year, but said that the online conference illustrated how we had all
