{"id":13067,"date":"2019-03-21T17:00:25","date_gmt":"2019-03-21T17:00:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/ie\/?p=13067"},"modified":"2019-06-06T16:45:28","modified_gmt":"2019-06-06T15:45:28","slug":"schoolmeals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/ie\/schoolmeals\/","title":{"rendered":"Improving School Meals in Zambia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hundreds of thousands of children in Zambia will have access to better quality school meals as a result of a recently launched project in central Zambia.<\/p>\n<p>The wide-ranging scheme will promote vegetable production, link vegetable producers and farmer groups with schools, provide targeted education and nutrition training to catering staff, teachers and parents, and create vegetable demonstration plots at 60 primary schools across the country\u2019s Central, Lusaka and Eastern Provinces.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/03\/wateringcan.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-13069\" src=\"https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/03\/wateringcan-300x299.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"299\" srcset=\"https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/03\/wateringcan.jpg 300w, https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/03\/wateringcan-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/03\/wateringcan-100x100.jpg 100w, https:\/\/selfhelpafrica.org\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/03\/wateringcan-160x160.jpg 160w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Backed by the World Food Programme (WFP) and being implemented by Self Help Africa, the \u2018Home Grown School Meals\u2019 project is seeking to improve food and nutrition for more than 200,000 children attending 435 primary schools, over the next two years.<\/p>\n<p>Farmers across the region will be supported to diversify their food production and sell their produce into schools in their locality, while \u2018training of trainer\u2019 workshops will be carried out amongst school and community representatives.<\/p>\n<p>The project will also promote a wide range of other education and training activities in food safety, nutrition and health. On top of this, it will support the formation of school health groups and train families in food storage methods.<\/p>\n<p>More than 50 schools in the district have received tools, seeds and equipment, and are currently in the process of clearing land to create demonstration plots where different varieties of vegetable can be planted and grown. These sites will be used to promote similar backyard gardening activities at other schools and at family level across the region.
