The balance \u2013 is spent on administration and on the costs of raising funds.<\/div><\/div><\/div><div  class=\"x-accordion-group\" ><div class=\"x-accordion-heading\"><a id=\"tab-689f78281c089\" class=\"x-accordion-toggle collapsed\" role=\"tab\" data-x-toggle=\"collapse-b\" data-x-toggleable=\"689f78281c089\" aria-selected=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"panel-689f78281c089\"><i class='x-framework-icon x-shortcode-accordion-icon' data-x-icon-s='&#x2b;' aria-hidden=true><\/i><span>Volunteering for Self Help Africa<\/span><\/a><\/div><div id=\"panel-689f78281c089\" class=\"x-accordion-body x-collapsed\" role=\"tabpanel\" data-x-toggle-collapse=\"1\" data-x-toggleable=\"689f78281c089\" aria-hidden=\"true\" aria-labelledby=\"tab-689f78281c089\"><div class=\"x-accordion-inner\">\n<p>All of Self Help Africa\u2019s development programmes are implemented by local staff and partner organisations in Africa. This is based upon the \u2018self help\u2019 principles of the organisation\u2019s founders.<\/p>\n<p>A range of volunteering opportunities do arise in the West however. Should you be in a position to lend your backing for our fundraising efforts, have a particular expertise which you think may be of assistance, or are a teacher or retired teacher interested in supporting our Development Education programme, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.selfhelpafrica.org\/uk\/contact\">we would be happy to speak to you<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Opportunities also arise from time to time for voluntary placements and internships within our offices.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div  class=\"x-accordion-group\" ><div class=\"x-accordion-heading\"><a id=\"tab-689f78281c098\" class=\"x-accordion-toggle collapsed\" role=\"tab\" data-x-toggle=\"collapse-b\" data-x-toggleable=\"689f78281c098\" aria-selected=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"panel-689f78281c098\"><i class='x-framework-icon x-shortcode-accordion-icon' data-x-icon-s='&#x2b;' aria-hidden=true><\/i><span>Will Self Help Africa work in other African countries?<\/span><\/a><\/div><div id=\"panel-689f78281c098\" class=\"x-accordion-body x-collapsed\" role=\"tabpanel\" data-x-toggle-collapse=\"1\" data-x-toggleable=\"689f78281c098\" aria-hidden=\"true\" aria-labelledby=\"tab-689f78281c098\"><div class=\"x-accordion-inner\">Following our merger with Gorta in July 2014, we now work in 10 core African countries. We also support key initiatives in The Gambia and Rwanda . Our work is guided by our Strategic Plan and by the level of resources available to undertake our programmes.<\/div><\/div><\/div><div  class=\"x-accordion-group\" ><div class=\"x-accordion-heading\"><a id=\"tab-689f78281c0a5\" class=\"x-accordion-toggle collapsed\" role=\"tab\" data-x-toggle=\"collapse-b\" data-x-toggleable=\"689f78281c0a5\" aria-selected=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"panel-689f78281c0a5\"><i class='x-framework-icon x-shortcode-accordion-icon' data-x-icon-s='&#x2b;' aria-hidden=true><\/i><span>Is Self Help Africa involved in delivering humanitarian relief and emergency aid?<\/span><\/a><\/div><div id=\"panel-689f78281c0a5\" class=\"x-accordion-body x-collapsed\" role=\"tabpanel\" data-x-toggle-collapse=\"1\" data-x-toggleable=\"689f78281c0a5\" aria-hidden=\"true\" aria-labelledby=\"tab-689f78281c0a5\"><div class=\"x-accordion-inner\">\n<p>Self Help Africa has worked for over three decades in rural development programmes that build farm productivity and support communities to adapt to and mitigate the effects of climate change.<\/p>\n<p>More recently, we have developed a capacity to support communities in urgent need, and have undertaken emergency response projects in Ethiopia, Kenya and Malawi.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div  class=\"x-accordion-group\" ><div class=\"x-accordion-heading\"><a id=\"tab-689f78281c0b1\" class=\"x-accordion-toggle collapsed\" role=\"tab\" data-x-toggle=\"collapse-b\" data-x-toggleable=\"689f78281c0b1\" aria-selected=\"false\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"panel-689f78281c0b1\"><i class='x-framework-icon x-shortcode-accordion-icon' data-x-icon-s='&#x2b;' aria-hidden=true><\/i><span>Can I sponsor a child, buy a goat, or lend my support in some other way?<\/span><\/a><\/div><div id=\"panel-689f78281c0b1\" class=\"x-accordion-body x-collapsed\" role=\"tabpanel\" data-x-toggle-collapse=\"1\" data-x-toggleable=\"689f78281c0b1\" aria-hidden=\"true\" aria-labelledby=\"tab-689f78281c0b1\"><div class=\"x-accordion-inner\">\n<p>Self Help Africa is not involved in child sponsorship. We do have a range of popular \u2018virtual gifts\u2019 including beehives, livestock and forestry available to buy however, and provide purchasers with attractive certificates with each purchase. Both organisations were initially founded in the mid-1980s in respond to food security crises in sub-Saharan Africa.<\/p>\n<p>In July 2014, Self Help Africa merged with Gorta, Ireland\u2019s oldest established NGO.
