The Self Help Africa and Irish Aid Science for Development Award is presented annually at the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition and encourages students to develop projects that could address sustainable development challenges faced by communities in the Global South.<\/span><\/p>\n

Amongst the challenges are:<\/span><\/p>\n

  • Famine and food insecurity<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Deforestation<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Clean water and sanitation<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Soil fertility and erosion<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Unreliable access to electricity<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Maternal and child healthcare<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Endemic diseases<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Access to markets and fair prices<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Access to credit<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Utilisation of new technologies<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Travel Bursary<\/h3>\n

    A travel bursary, sponsored by Irish Aid, is awarded to the winning project. This bursary funds one student and their teacher to travel with Self Help Africa to one of their programme countries on a study visit where they have the opportunity to carry out field research on their project, interact with African student counterparts, and to meet local communities who they could exchange ideas with regarding their project findings.<\/p><\/div><\/div>
