Self Help Africa (SHA) is an international NGO operating in nine Africa countries. SHA’s vision is an economically thriving and resilient rural Africa, and a mission to develop enterprising solutions that enable smallholder farmers to achieve a better quality of life. We work with smallholder farmers, farmer associations, cooperatives, and agribusinesses across Africa to help farmers grow and sell more food, improve diets, diversify incomes, and make their livelihoods more sustainable and resilient to external shocks like climate change. 

SHA’s interventions among smallholder farmers is implemented through both short-term and long-term, donor funded projects that aim to promote viable and competitive value chains. The projects are implemented either directly or through local partners. Either way, SHA provides thought leadership in developing implementation strategies that guide every project. Our Strategic Plan and related policies inform project strategies and actions in several thematic areas including production, value addition, marketing, stakeholder collaboration, natural resource management, inclusion, nutrition, and resilience building. 

Project Background 

Baringo Resilience Initiative: Nurturing Greater Opportunity (BARINGO) is a collaboration between Gorta-Self Help Africa (SHA) and co-applicants Farming Systems Kenya (FSK)  

The objective of the project is to contribute to improved food, nutrition, and income security for 60,000 beneficiaries in Baringo, Kenya. Specifically, food security will increase through increased agricultural production and diversification and Agri-enterprise development, nutrition security will improve through the promotion of nutrient rich crops and fruit trees, kitchen gardening and infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practises and improved nutrition and dietary diversity awareness. The income security of households (HHs) will increase through improved agricultural and livestock productivity and farmer level organisation, improved land and water management, integration into profitable value chains and improved access to market information financial services. Activities will be enhanced through improved collaboration of sub-county and county level platforms and networks focused on agriculture, nutrition, resilience, peace building and land management. 

The objective of the assignment 

The term of reference is comprised of two approaches:

  • Approach 1: The end of project evaluation
  • Approach 2: Video documentation of the project’s success stories
