The Gorta Group is comprised of Self Help Africa, United Purpose, and social enterprises Partner Africa, TruTrade and Cumo Microfinance (Malawi). In August 2021 Self Help Africa (SHA) and United Purpose (UP) merged. The two organisations – SHA headquartered in Ireland and UP in Wales – implement projects to end extreme hunger and poverty.
This merger doubled our size and reach and means that in 2022 we are implementing poverty eradication projects in 17 countries, employing 900 staff mainly in sub-Saharan Africa but also Bangladesh and Brazil. Collectively, we are also part of a group that includes social enterprise subsidiaries Partner Africa, TruTrade and Cumo Microfinance (Malawi).
Under our new 5-year Global Strategy – Strategic Objective 7’ – Culture, People & Resourcing; ‘We will cultivate a culture of belonging, wellbeing and safety, maximizing the creation of a safe space, where people feel they can speak up and be heard’. It is also envisaged that this will help us drive our business by maximizing opportunities within our global team. The subsequent action is to; ‘define overall group values and principles. Embed and assess alignment of values with behaviours and systems to enable transformation across the group’.
The process will build on the work that has already taken place through the ARISE Committee and ensure how best to ingrain Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) into the culture of the group. It will review existing values across the group as below and how we will apply the newly agreed set of group values.
Self Help Africa – Equality, Innovation, Learning & Accountability
United Purpose – Justice, Dignity & Respect
Partner Africa – Collaboration, Integrity, Honesty, Professionalism & Inspiration
